Student Ministries at The Chapel is an exciting and deeply meaningful ministry to young people in high school (9th–12th grade). Our desire is to connect students to Christ through the power of the cross.

Camp Barnabas is a Christ-centered organization located in Missouri that allows children and adults with special needs to experience the true love of Jesus wrapped up in the fun of camp. A team of our high-schoolers recently traveled there to serve. Stephanie relates a lesson that a few of the campers showed her.
One thing I will always remember about Camp Barnabas was how the campers in my cabin took joy in the little things—the things that I have always seemed to overlook a bit.
One of the campers told me she liked my socks because they had hearts on them. So I asked her if she would like to wear them for the day. She said, “Yes!!!!” and got so excited about getting to wear my socks.
I’ll never forget another camper named Chrissy. Whenever a song that she liked came on she would start getting super excited for it and start singing out loud and want the music turned up and it was so awesome just getting to see her love a song so much and sing along with it.
Looking back on the joy they had, I could see how smaller things in life I overlook often can give someone so much joy. I loved being able to see their joy and it helped me start to notice some of the things in life that may seem little or unimportant, and instead see the awesome joy hidden in them.
Two of the leaders from the recent high school mission trip to Appalachia reflect on all that was accomplished. Contributions by Steve Simmons and Cindy Berry.
The Appalachia high school team consisted of 31 team members, 3 projects, and 1 purpose.
One team constructed an addition on a small home for a grandmother who has custody of her four young grandchildren. The 9-yr-old boy was sleeping on a mattress on the floor, so this addition was to be his bedroom. They also cleaned the yard, planted flowers and landscaped. The family grew closer to the team as the week wore on and were so grateful for all that was done for them in the name of Christ. The three younger children really bonded with our students, as they played with them and held them all day, every day. The teenager also opened up.
The best thing about the house project was the way the students bonded with the three younger grandkids and eventually with the older one during the week. Kyle at first was hesitant to warm up to the students while the two younger girls seem to latch on to the students. They even labeled one student Dad and another one Mom. You could tell Kyle was missing a male example in his life. Those kids were so precious. You just couldn’t help but love them. By week’s end it was a sad goodbye. Doing the construction was important, but the way the students poured their hearts into those kids was worth the entire trip. The students worked very hard during the 90-degree heat all week and did not complain. They constantly asked if there was anything else they could do. We have some very special students that God is using.
A second team constructed a sidewalk alongside a home belonging to a blind man and his wife and daughter. The man had been blind for ten years, due to diabetes complications. He had a ramp out of his house, but the dirt path beyond it would get muddy and difficult for him to maneuver with his cane. The path, made of pavers, looked great and they were very happy!
Finally, the third team presented vacation Bible school at a church in Bridgeport. They taught about the life of Joseph through costumes, skits, songs and crafts. It was a grand week! The team spent the afternoons working at the Clarksburg Mission, which ministers to drug addicts and prostitutes. They dug ground at the loading dock for two days to make a back-up spot; this was a dream the director had for two years and our students loved the hard labor! They also helped organize their thrift store and storage areas. Each day they heard testimonies from clients whose lives had been changed by the power of Christ!
Thirty-one Christ-followers used three projects to accomplish one purpose: spreading Christ's love to Appalachia.
