A Harvest in Mozambique

Spring, 2011, The Chapel’s short-term Mozambique team learned about four hectares of tillable soil not too far from the Limpopo River just down the road from our adopted village, Chaimite.

The partnership vision was this: The Chapel would help purchase the field, the river pump and the drip irrigation system (the most efficient form of irrigation). World Relief would facilitate the development process and find a qualified supervisor to monitor the field production for several years. Selected local residents agreed to prepare the fields and irrigation system followed by the hard work of cultivation and sowing/planting.

Once the crops are harvested, the field workers will begin to pay back the loans they received in order to farm their part of the field. Once full payment is made, more land will be purchased and cultivated by other locals. This is what makes the project a sustainable one.

The WOW women’s ministry made the purchase of the land possible when enough money was raised through the Purse Party and silent auction held at Guy’s on Waterloo Road this past autumn. Many of the purses sold were the very ones knitted by the women in Mozambique.

Pastor Jay Halley says, “It was remarkable to see how The Chapel’s women and others came together in partnership ministry with the women of Mozambique to bless the villages there through an agricultural and economic development ministry. All of this will only lead to more opportunities to share the Word of God.”

A great illustration of Christ-centered, holistic ministry.
