Scenes from Haiti

by Fred Muffet
Fred and Sandy Muffet are leading a team of 23 in Haiti from December 31 – January 7. They are doing work projects for Mission of Hope and medical clinics. Get a glimpse into what they’ve experienced there so far, and pray for those in Haiti still suffering from the January 12, 2010 earthquake.
Bob, Todd, and I have been speaking at a Pastors’ Conference that runs for three days. The people of Haiti are starving for church affiliation, and Pastor Lex is working hard to fill that need. He also is working with the BeLikeBrit people who are building an orphanage next door to the church.
Some background on BeLikeBrit: Britney Gengel was a 19-year-old American who was serving in Haiti at the time of the earthquake. While there, she sent a text to her parents that she wanted to finish school, move to Haiti and start an orphanage. Then the earthquake took her life.
In her memory, her family and friends are building an orphanage on a beautiful hillside. The builders and the Gengel family are using Mission Of Hope International (MOHI) as a base camp while the orphanage is under construction. In fact, our power is coming from a generator owned by BeLikeBrit.

Our “Business”
A friend works for a large global corporation. Their business has to do with both those within their organization, and the customers they are trying to reach. The culture and mission they create must be embraced within if they are to have success without.
Often I am asked: What is the vision/mission of The Chapel? What might we look like in five or ten years? What dreams, risks, or adventures might we be taking down the road? How does the Lord want the Akron area or Northeast Ohio or other parts of the world to be different because The Chapel exists?
Back to my friend. His company has to remember what business they are in. As a church, what business are we in? Who are we and why do we exist? The Bible is full of potential “mission statements.” I appreciate the simplicity of the Apostle Paul’s words: “I thank my God every time I remember you in all my prayers for all of you. I always pray with joy because of your partnership in the gospel from the first to this day.” (Philippians 1:3–5)

Day Is Night and Night Is Day
In the first few days in India, one of the enormous challenges is the ten and one-half hours of time zone difference.
Yes, you read that right, there is a one-half hour time zone in India. Long ago, India wanted the entire country to be on the same time zone. Here’s what one person speculated about its origins:
We can only assume India chose their half-hour offset to avoid the political fallout that would have resulted had they favored noon in eastern Calcutta over noon in western Ahmedabad; this way, in a show of national unity, everyone is equally inconvenienced.
And, I just learned this about Nepal, a fifteen-minute time zone:
Perhaps politics also played into Nepal’s decision to offset themselves a further fifteen minutes ahead of India—a temporal nose-thumbing at their neighbors to the south?

Everything Changed
“This changes everything” advertisers from Rustoleum to the iPhone 4 have given us hope.
With the coming of God’s Son, Jesus the Messiah, and the birth of his new covenant-community, the church, we could really say, ”This changes everything!”
With Jesus’ entrance to the human scene, John the Baptist said basically, “I’m not your change-agent, nor is your established religious rites—he is!”
“I baptize you with water. But one more powerful than I will come. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.” Luke 3:16
Just prior to Jesus’ departure, he commissions his disciples to carry on and proclaim the good news to all nations. Jesus says, “I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.” Luke 24:49

A Harvest in Mozambique
Spring, 2011, The Chapel’s short-term Mozambique team learned about four hectares of tillable soil not too far from the Limpopo River just down the road from our adopted village, Chaimite.
The partnership vision was this: The Chapel would help purchase the field, the river pump and the drip irrigation system (the most efficient form of irrigation). World Relief would facilitate the development process and find a qualified supervisor to monitor the field production for several years. Selected local residents agreed to prepare the fields and irrigation system followed by the hard work of cultivation and sowing/planting.
Once the crops are harvested, the field workers will begin to pay back the loans they received in order to farm their part of the field. Once full payment is made, more land will be purchased and cultivated by other locals. This is what makes the project a sustainable one.

Worship Pastor Candidate in Green
It is so exciting to let you all know that Brian Blackburn will be in Green this week. We are asking God if Brian should be our new worship pastor in Green. Would you pray with us toward this end?
Brian grew up in Columbus, Ohio and currently lives there with his wife Lori and three daughters. He is a graduate of Cedarville University and is nearing the completion of graduate work in worship studies at Liberty University. Ministry background: variety of roles in leading worship, communications, and administration. He has ministered faithfully in three church plants, and also served two churches through periods of leadership transition. With 10 years of pastoral experience and over 15 years of leading worship, Brian is committed to leading Christ’s church to praise God with all their hearts–whether with great celebration or through quiet expressions of dependence.
This Sunday, January 15, Brian will lead the 9:00 and 10:40am services in the worship center in Green. We would enjoy receiving feedback from the congregation. Please send your thoughts to green.worship@the-chapel.org.

Exhausted and Excited
The two words, exhausted and excited, don’t normally go together. Yet, in coming back from India this week, it is how I feel.
We had terrific ministry in India. Pastors, church planters and teachers came from all over India to be in the class. Some traveled 12 hours by bus and others took three days by train. We had students from Myanmar and Sri Lanka.
The days were full of class lectures and interaction. We talked about some of the Apostle Paul’s letters and about principles of church ministry. After class, there was a steady stream of students who came to visit with me, right up until the last hours of daylight.

Jesus=Life
Here is a simple formula: Jesus=life.
“In him [Christ] was life, and that life was the light of man.”
“Jesus declared, ‘I am the bread of life.’”
“I have come that they might have life.”
“I am the way, the truth and the life.”
“Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.”
Jesus=life.
Spiritual life. Eternal life. Real life. Abundant life.
Life is enriched by “being still” and knowing he is God—by cultivating a deep intimacy with the Savior through stillness and study and solitude and prayer.

Still Committed to Missions?
Last week I wrote about being “excited but exhausted” by my ministry trip to India. I would love to write that I am fully back in our time zone and that my energy is at 100%.
The truth is that my energy fell off last Friday. I had gotten back and had fully immersed myself into church life … then Thursday came. I was out of gas. From flying to India, the dryness of airplane flight had bothered my eye. So, a trip to the eye doctor was required. Friday was a washout day. Saturday and Sunday brought some rest, but I was still sleeping ten hours a night.
Why share all this?
I’m not asking for a pity party! It is to relate the cost of following Christ. Doing ministry can be hard—physically and spiritually. Getting out of your comfort zone is an emotional journey. Getting out of your home country can be a physically draining time. Spiritually, great ministry energizes us. But, the last time that I checked, I am a person of mind, body, and spirit.

A Note from Pastor Jay Halley
Dear Chapel Family,
I will soon be joining The Chapel’s pastoral staff in Sandusky, Ohio. For more than twenty years the lead pastor of that church and I have discussed the possibility of working together some day. Now is the time. Sandusky Chapel (with historic ties to this church) has developed to the point where their needs are an excellent match with my giftings, passions, and experiences. This move simply reflects a desire we must all share as Christ-followers: How can I most optimally serve God? My 23+ years on staff here, working with the finest co-workers and serving the most wonderful congregation in the world, have prepared us for this new field of ministry.
I will serve as one of the team-teachers, give form to the mission efforts, perform general pastoral functions….and more. Also, you may be interested to know that my aging parents still live in Huron and attend Sandusky Chapel, a nice side benefit to being there.

Thank You, Jay!
From the mouth of their Lord, Christians are forever familiar with the word “go.” From the examples of everyone from Abraham to the Apostle Paul, the Christian pastor is very aware of God’s call on his life, which at times may include moving. It is with a lot of gratitude and a bit of sadness that we affirm God’s new call on Pastor Jay Halley’s life as the Lord moves our friend to another room in the Kingdom. Read Jay’s words below:
I will soon be joining The Chapel’s pastoral staff in Sandusky, Ohio.
While we anticipate new opportunities ahead, there is certainly a mix of pain and sorrow. You have blessed us in ways we cannot even begin to number. We love you, this church, just as you have loved us. We will miss you. Please pray for us as we experience the strains of transition. Thank you for investing in our lives, the lives of our children (Dan, Matt and Anna). Our journey with Christ has been richer and one of joy because of you, The Chapel. (Read more from Jay here.)
